schmidt hammer lassen design wins Red Dot Award for “SOLID” urban furniture
schmidt hammer lassen design (SHL Design) has won the prestigious German Red Dot Design Award 2009 in the Product Design category for their ‘”SOLID” range of urban furniture and *LED lighting fixtures.
Inspired by the rough, industrial properties of concrete, the “SOLID” furniture range achieves a subtle balance of craft and sustainability, creating a delicacy of form and a highly detailed finish. As a material, concrete has obvious advantages, its strength and low-maintenance being ideally suited to tough urban environments. “SOLID” exploits these characteristics to create a line of furniture that is versatile and highly durable.
The elegant LED lighting units consist of a simple concrete base and a steel top which houses the lighting fixture. The concrete base is common to all the lighting products in the range which allows the furniture to be easily repaired if damaged.
SHL Design, a division of the award-winning Scandinavian practice schmidt hammer lassen architects, has a track record of designing innovative furniture. In 2005, SHL Design won the Red Dot Award for the stacking chair “Flakes” (read in left column) and the practice’s recent win further demonstrates SHL Design’s commitment to developing functional and visually exciting products.
Lars Vejen, head of schmidt hammer lassen design, said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award that celebrates such a high-quality of design. “SOLID” builds on the considerable success of the practice’s existing portfolio of work, creating a range of furniture that is both stylish and durable enough to cope with urban life.”
